One sentence wise husbands should never say to their wives
A relationship expert has warned that telling a wife, “My parents will always come first, and you have to adjust to them,” can create insecurity and resentment in a marriage.
Indian relationship counsellor Chetna Chakravarty recently discussed the challenges couples may face when balancing responsibilities towards parents and a spouse, particularly in joint-family settings.
According to Chakravarty, a mature husband should avoid turning family disagreements into a choice between his wife and parents. Instead, he should listen to both sides, understand their concerns and work towards a solution through communication.
She said expecting a wife to repeatedly compromise simply to accommodate her in-laws can gradually create frustration and emotional distance. A woman entering a new family may already be adjusting to unfamiliar people, routines and expectations, making support from her husband particularly important.
Telling her that his parents’ decisions are always final may make her feel that her opinions do not matter or that her husband will not support her during difficult situations. Such feelings can eventually lead to resentment, conflict and strain in the relationship.
Chakravarty stressed that prioritising a wife does not mean neglecting parents. Caring for and respecting parents remains an important responsibility, while a spouse’s views and feelings should also be given appropriate importance in decisions affecting married life.
The key, she said, is to avoid framing family relationships as a competition over who matters more. A healthy marriage requires balance, mutual respect and open communication, with neither the spouse nor the parents being treated as an opponent during disagreements.
