Reigning champions Argentina are set to begin their campaign to retain the title at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Lionel Scaloni's team will face Algeria in the first match of Group 'J' on Wednesday (June 17) at 7 am Bangladesh time in Kansas City.

The Albiceleste are being given the lead in terms of statistics and possibilities before the match starts. The football analysis company Opta Supercomputer has shown Argentina as the clear favorite in this match.

The analysis based on more than 25,000 simulations shows that Argentina has a 67.8 percent chance of winning. On the other hand, Algeria has a only 13 percent chance of winning. The probability of the match between the two teams ending in a draw is estimated at 19.2 percent.

Argentina is considered one of the strongest teams not only in the opening match, but also in the entire group stage. The defending world champions are the biggest contenders to top Group J, which includes Algeria, Austria and Jordan.

According to Opta's predictions, Argentina has a 69.2 percent chance of winning the group. However, Algeria, representing Africa, is not being completely discounted. The team's chances of making it to the knockout stages are estimated at 57.4 percent.

It remains to be seen how strong Argentina can start their new World Cup campaign. On the other hand, Algeria will also be eager to show their position in the tournament by showing surprises against strong opponents.
