Orlando Gil's heroic performance leads Paraguay past Germany in penalty shootout
Four-time world champions Germany's World Cup campaign came to an end in the Round of 32 after a thrilling 1-1 draw over 120 minutes followed by a 4-3 penalty shootout victory for Paraguay, orchestrated by goalkeeper Orlando Gil's outstanding performance at Orlando's Camping World Stadium.
Germany dominated from the start, controlling possession, passing and attacks. But Julian Nagelsmann's side struggled with finishing, unable to break through Paraguay's well-organised defence.
Paraguay remained disciplined throughout, defending deep and launching quick counter-attacks. Their strategy paid off in the 42nd minute when Julio Enciso headed home from Matias Galarza's cross to give them a 1-0 lead at half-time.
Germany intensified their attacks in the second half and equalised through Kai Havertz in the 54th minute, heading in Florian Wirtz's cross.
Germany pushed for more goals but were repeatedly denied by Gil. He made a brilliant save to deny Havertz in the 77th minute. The match went to extra time after no further goals.
In extra time, Jonathan Tah's header appeared to give Germany the lead in the 102nd minute, but VAR ruled it out for a foul on Gil.
Gil continued his heroics, making at least three crucial saves in stoppage time to keep Paraguay in the match.
In the penalty shootout, Gil saved Havertz's first spot-kick and also denied Germany's fourth attempt. After five rounds, the score was 3-3.
In the sixth round, Germany's Jonathan Tah fired over the crossbar, and Jose Canal calmly converted to seal a 4-3 shootout victory for Paraguay.
Statistics showed Germany's dominance: 21 shots (7 on target) compared to Paraguay's 7 (4 on target). Germany had 75 per cent possession and completed 753 passes with 92 per cent accuracy, while Paraguay had 262 passes with 69 per cent accuracy.
But football is ultimately about results, and Gil delivered that result. His countless saves throughout the match and two crucial stops in the shootout effectively wrote Germany's World Cup exit.
After two consecutive group-stage exits, Germany's knockout return ended in disappointment. Paraguay, on the other hand, continued their historic run by reaching the last 16.
