Oscar authorities give tough message on AI-based production
Amid the ongoing debate over the use of AI in films, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made a major change to the Oscar award rules.
According to the new rules, only real human performances will be considered eligible for the Oscar in the acting category. Any performance created with artificial intelligence or digital technology has been declared ineligible as 'artificial performance'.
Human-written content has also been made mandatory in the screenplay category. Although artificial intelligence can be used as an assistant, the main creative authority must remain in the hands of humans.
The Academy said that there is no obstacle to the use of artificial intelligence as an auxiliary tool in filmmaking, but it should not replace the main creative process.
In addition, the new rules will allow an artist to receive multiple nominations in the same category in the acting category. The submission policy has also been relaxed in the international feature film category, so that films that have won awards at multiple international festivals are also eligible for nomination. Some structural changes have also been made to the technical categories and voting process.
According to analysts, the change is a clear message to control the influence of artificial intelligence at the Oscars and reassert the importance of human creativity.
