‘Our Sticky Love’ despite controversy, huge response in Bangladesh

The South Korean romantic comedy series ‘Our Sticky Love’ has remained at the centre of viewers’ interest since its release. Jung Hae-in, Ha Young and Heo Seong-tae have acted in this 12-episode series built around a story of love, memory loss, mystery and the crime world.

The series was released on Netflix on August 7. In the story, prosecutor Go Eun-se loses his memory after becoming the victim of a serious attack. At that time a former boxer named Jang Tae-ha claims himself to be her lover. After that various mysteries surrounding their relationship keep coming to the fore. Alongside the love story, connections with the crime world are also gradually revealed.

In the second week of its release the series occupied the top position in Netflix’s non-English TV list. In one week from August 10 to 16 the series received 7.5 million views and was watched for a total of 88 million hours. At the same time ‘Our Sticky Love’ found a place in the top 10 lists of 68 countries of the world. Among them the series was at number one in 26 countries.

However, controversy arose surrounding actress Ha Young immediately after the release of the series. Criticism started on social media after information about her great-grandfather’s pro-Japan activities came to the fore. Initially her agency claimed the allegation to be baseless. Later after historical documents came up the organisation changed its position and expressed regret. Ha Young also apologised personally.

Although several promotional events of the actress were cancelled in the wake of the controversy, it did not have any immediate major impact on the viewers’ interest in the series. Rather ‘Our Sticky Love’ held its position in Netflix’s popular list for several weeks after release. As a result this series built with a mix of romance, mystery and thrill has created a place in the discussions among Korean entertainment lovers.
