Pakistan, Afghanistan trade heavy fire on border area again
Tensions rose again along the Afghanistan–Pakistan border as security forces from both countries exchanged heavy gunfire late Friday, officials confirmed.
The situation escalated after recent peace talks failed. However no casualties have been reporyed so far, reports Reuters.
Afghan Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid accused Pakistani forces of attacking the Spin Boldak area in Kandahar. Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s Office countered that Afghan forces fired unprovoked shots across the Chaman border.
Pakistan’s Musharraf Zaidi said the country remains on high alert to safeguard its sovereignty and citizens.
Peace talks in Saudi Arabia, mediated by Qatar, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, ended without progress. The renewed clash comes days after those failed discussions.
Islamabad alleges Afghan-based militants are carrying out attacks in Pakistan, including suicide bombings—claims Kabul denies.
The border has seen repeated violence since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
