Paulo Coelho's 'The Alchemist' set to enchant Dhaka stage

Paulo Coelho's globally acclaimed novel The Alchemist is set to make its Dhaka stage debut in a new theatrical adaptation by theatre troupe Actomania, bringing the beloved story of dreams, self-discovery and destiny to local audiences.

The production follows Santiago, a young shepherd from Andalusia who embarks on a journey towards the Egyptian pyramids in search of a hidden treasure. Along the way, his physical journey becomes a deeper quest for purpose, self-realisation and the courage to pursue one’s dreams.

Director Talha Zubayer said the production seeks to reconnect audiences with their personal dreams at a time when people are increasingly consumed by the pressures of career and everyday life.

"People often become so caught up in the race for career success that they lose sight of what they truly want from life," he said. "The Alchemist reminds us that everyone has a dream or purpose worth pursuing. This production is an attempt to rediscover that inner calling and reflect on the spiritual journey of life."

Through atmospheric lighting, music and performance, the play will portray Santiago's journey across the desert and the transformation he undergoes along the way.

The inaugural and regular performances are scheduled to be staged soon at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

The cast includes Shashank Saha, Kamruzzaman Tapu, Sayem Sizan, Saira Akter, Salauddin Evan, Fatema Elma, Kamrul Tihan, Mahbuba Mou, Sanbi Mir, Marzuk Hasan, Joybrata Biswas, Mahfuz Islam Megh, Bappi Chowdhury, Sakib Shuvo, Oishi, Saad, Rihad Islam, Ratul Aryan, Sulaiha Tarjia, Rudra, Jony and Barish-Dhara.
