PCB takes players’ phones ahead of final England Test

Pakistan’s troubled England tour has taken another unusual turn, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) taking custody of mobile phones belonging to some members of the national squad ahead of the third and final Test at Edgbaston.

According to 365 News, PCB officials collected the primary communication devices from members of the newly formed 16-man squad.

The identities of the players whose phones were taken have not been disclosed.

However, the PCB has also not officially explained the reason for the move.

The decision has raised questions over the board’s authority to restrict players’ use of their personal devices.

Players are already prohibited from using mobile phones in dressing rooms or dugouts during international matches. However, the report said the latest move is unusual as the PCB has reportedly taken the phones away from players altogether.

The devices are expected to remain in PCB custody until the final ball of the Edgbaston Test, according to the report.

The development comes amid further turmoil in the Pakistan camp.

The PCB has ordered an investigation into Imam-ul-Haq after he did not bat in the second Test because of a calf injury. Reports have alleged that the injury may have been fabricated. If proven, he could face a ban of up to two years.

Pakistan have also overhauled their squad after losing the first two Tests heavily. Seven players were sent home ahead of the final match, with seven replacements called up.

The coaching staff has also been reshuffled, with head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul returning home. White-ball coaches Mike Hesson and Ashley Noffke will take charge as head coach and bowling coach respectively in Birmingham.

Pakistan will face England on Wednesday, looking to avoid a series whitewash. The Test is scheduled to begin at 4pm Bangladesh time.
