Peace in threatening world cannot be achieved without strength: US Defense Secretary
United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth defended the recent operation in Venezuela that led to the forcible detention of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, saying peace in a dangerous world cannot be achieved without strength.
He made the remarks while speaking to CBS News, a US partner of the BBC.
Hegseth praised former President Donald Trump’s decision, stating, “We believe Trump made the right call. In this dangerous world, peace does not come without strength.”
He emphasized that the US acts in the country’s best interest and acknowledged those who have sacrificed their lives for national security.
Responding to questions about Venezuela’s future, Hegseth said, “This was a law enforcement operation. Congress will be involved, and ultimately, the people of Venezuela will determine the next steps. In the end, America will benefit in terms of security and prosperity, and we believe the Venezuelan people could benefit as well.”
