Pentagon launches special military versions of ChatGPT and Grok
The US Department of Defence, the Pentagon, has launched specialised artificial intelligence services to expand the use of AI in the military and defence sectors. ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government have been added to the Pentagon’s controlled environment for nearly three million military and civilian personnel, offering capabilities beyond those available in standard consumer versions. The services are being provided through the Pentagon’s central AI platform, GenAI.mil.
GenAI.mil is a controlled platform that allows various AI models to be used in a secure environment for government-related work. Google’s Gemini platform was already available on the system. With the addition of ChatGPT and Grok, users can now access multiple AI models within the same infrastructure. According to the Pentagon, more than 1.7 million of its nearly three million military and civilian personnel have already gained access to GenAI.mil.
The main reason for using dedicated infrastructure for military applications instead of conventional commercial AI services is data security. According to the Pentagon, the controlled environment was created to ensure that personnel do not need to enter sensitive government information into public AI platforms. The unauthorised use of government data on commercial AI systems is considered a risk known as “shadow AI”. Both ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government have received Impact Level 5 (IL5) security authorisation. However, they are not authorised for the handling of the highest-level classified information.
ChatGPT Mil has primarily been designed for administrative and document-based tasks. It offers features including chat, file management, project creation and the use of custom GPTs. The system can be used to accelerate a range of tasks involving unclassified information, including policy development, planning, administrative activities and logistics.
Grok for Government, meanwhile, is intended for military operations and broader organisational functions. Alongside improving employee productivity, information and knowledge management, and secure collaboration, it could also be used for market analysis related to military equipment procurement and supply-chain management.
