Philippines earthquake death toll rises to 55
The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck southern Philippines earlier this week has risen to 55, the country's disaster management authorities confirmed on Thursday (June 11).
Authorities said additional bodies were recovered from collapsed buildings and debris in several affected areas, pushing the number of fatalities higher. Dozens of people remain injured, while several others are still missing, raising fears that the toll could increase further.
The 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck coastal areas of Mindanao, causing widespread destruction to homes, hospitals, schools and other critical infrastructure.
General Santos City and parts of Sarangani province were among the hardest-hit areas. Thousands of displaced residents have taken shelter in temporary evacuation centres as emergency response efforts continue.
Rescue teams are facing challenges due to damaged roads, unstable structures and ongoing aftershocks, which have complicated search and recovery operations.
Authorities have urged residents to stay away from damaged buildings and remain alert as aftershocks continue across the affected region.
