Police pull out of security for remaining BPL matches in Sylhet
Police have informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) that they will not be able to provide security for the remaining Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) matches in Sylhet due to nationwide election-related duties.
In a letter sent on Sunday (January 4) to BCB Chief Executive Officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury, the Sylhet Metropolitan Police said its personnel would be redeployed to ensure public safety during the national election, making it impossible to continue policing BPL matches at the Sylhet International Stadium.
Copies of the letter were also sent to BPL Governing Council Chairman Aminul Islam Bulbul and Member Secretary Iftikhar Rahman Mithu.
The letter, signed by Sylhet Divisional Police Commissioner Abdul Quddus Chowdhury, requested the BCB to arrange alternative security.
BCB officials said they are exploring other options. “It is not possible to move the Sylhet leg of the BPL at this moment,” Mithu said. “Matches will continue here until January 12 before shifting to the Dhaka phase. We are considering all alternatives, including support from the army and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). We hope the issue will be resolved.”
