Police raid at Tongi's Haji Mazar slum, 13 held

Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) have recovered a large quantity of heroin, local weapons, cash and CCTV cameras used to monitor police movements during a special anti-narcotics drive at the Haji Mazar slum in Tongi, Gazipur. Thirteen people were arrested on charges of drug sales and consumption during the operation.

The drive was conducted from 3:30am to 10:00am on Wednesday, August 5. GMP Additional Police Commissioner Mohammad Belayet Hossain led the operation.

Police said they searched hundreds of rooms belonging to identified drug traders in the Haji Mazar slum. During the search, they seized 1 kg 600 grams of heroin, various drug consumption paraphernalia, several locally-made weapons, Tk 2.56 lakh in cash from drug sales, foreign currency, several tolas of gold ornaments, a money-counting machine, and CCTV cameras and their DVR used to monitor police movements.

During the drive, 13 people were arrested on charges of drug sales and consumption. However, police did not disclose their identities immediately in the interest of the investigation.

GMP Additional Police Commissioner Mohammad Belayet Hossain said cases under the Narcotics Control Act have been filed against the arrestees at the concerned police station. They have been sent to the Gazipur court after legal proceedings.
