UEFA Nations League
Portugal edge past Spain in penalty shootout
Portugal secured their second UEFA Nations League title with a dramatic 5-3 win over Spain in a penalty shootout, following a 2-2 draw after extra time at the Allianz Arena on Sunday night (June 8).
The thrilling final saw both teams trading goals in regulation time before the match went to penalties, where Portugal held their nerve to emerge victorious. With this win, Portugal becomes the first nation to win the UEFA Nations League more than once, having claimed the inaugural title in 2019 with a victory over the Netherlands.
Spain took the early lead in the 21st minute through Martin Zubimendi, but Portugal quickly responded as Nuno Mendes equalized just five minutes later. Mikel Oyarzabal restored Spain’s advantage in the dying moments of the first half, giving La Roja a 2-1 lead at the break.
Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese captain, leveled the match again in the 61st minute with a powerful header, taking the game into extra time. Despite several chances, neither side could break the deadlock in the additional 30 minutes, leading to a tense penalty shootout.
Portugal converted all five of their penalties, with Gonzalo Ramos, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, Nuno Mendes, and Ruben Neves finding the back of the net. Spain, meanwhile, started strong with goals from Mikel Merino, Alex Baena, and Isco, but Alvaro Morata’s attempt was crucially saved by Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
Ronaldo's leadership and a composed Portuguese side ultimately sealed a historic victory, adding another major international trophy to their collection.
