Portugal-Colombia clash: A battle of equations, not just points

Colombia have already secured their knockout berth, and Portugal are also on the verge of qualifying. But the Group K equation is far from settled. When Portugal face Colombia in their final group match, there will still be plenty of calculations and ambitions on both sides. Both teams will be desperate to avoid a potential nightmare scenario in the next round.

Colombia lead the group with two wins, while Portugal are second with a win and a draw.

Finishing top of the group is crucial, as the Group K winners will face one of the best third-placed teams in the next round, offering a comparatively easier path. The runners-up, on the other hand, could face a tough opponent like England, Croatia or Ghana.

Portugal winger Pedro Neto admitted that the possibility of finishing second is on their minds. "Honestly, we sometimes think about what scenarios could happen. It would be a lie to say we haven't thought about what could happen if we finish second or third," he said.

"But as Portuguese, with our mentality, the most important thing is to always be the best. So, without knowing what could happen in other groups, we will face Colombia with the aim of finishing first."

Colombia, runners-up at the 2024 Copa America, have played eye-catching football in their first two matches, combining pace, attacking flair and a solid defence. They started their campaign with a three-goal win over Uzbekistan and showed patience to beat DR Congo.

Portugal's path has been bumpier. After a frustrating draw with Congo, where they completed 740 passes but managed only one shot on target, they were heavily criticised. But they bounced back in style, thrashing Uzbekistan 5-0, with Cristiano Ronaldo among the scorers.

Ronaldo's return to form is a big relief for Portugal. After a poor first match, he was under intense pressure, especially with Messi, Mbappe, Vinicius and Haaland all scoring freely. His brace against Uzbekistan has brought him back to confidence.

Colombia's physical strength, quick counter-attacks and organised defence will be a stern test for Portugal's depth and quality. Colombia need only a draw to secure top spot. Both teams will also have to contend with the intense heat in Miami.

Possible lineups
Colombia: Vargas; Munoz, Davinson Sanchez, Lukumi, Mojica; Lerma, Rios; John Arias, James Rodriguez (c), Luis Diaz; Cucho Hernandez.

Portugal: Diogo Costa; Dalot, Ruben Dias, Goncalo Inacio, Nuno Mendes; Joao Neves, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes (c); Pedro Neto, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rafael Leao.
