A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off Mexico's southern Pacific coast on Friday (July 17), prompting tsunami warnings along parts of the Pacific coastline.

The quake also shook neighbouring Guatemala and El Salvador.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake struck near the coast of Mexico's Chiapas state.

Following the quake, authorities warned that tsunami waves of up to one metre could reach parts of the Pacific coasts of Mexico and Guatemala.

Mexico's navy later said only limited sea level fluctuations were expected but urged coastal residents to remain vigilant.

The strong tremor sent many people rushing out of buildings into open areas.

Guatemalan authorities reported minor landslides in several areas and suspended classes in some regions. However, no deaths or major damage had been reported till now.

Several aftershocks ranging between magnitude 5 and 6 were also recorded after the main earthquake, while authorities continued monitoring the situation.
