Powerful earthquake hits Japan, many trapped in collapsed shopping mall

A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's southern Kumamoto region on Tuesday at 4:27 pm local time. Preliminary reports indicate it is one of the strongest earthquakes to hit Japan in nearly 15 years .

The worst damage occurred at an Aeon shopping mall in Kumamoto, where an explosion was heard after the intense tremors and part of the second floor collapsed. Rescue workers fear several people remain trapped under the rubble, and the casualty count may rise .

Local fire services said many people were injured by falling debris and shattered glass from the building. At least 50 people have been hospitalised .

Speaking at an emergency press conference immediately after the quake, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the government's top priority is saving lives. She urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant, warning that strong aftershocks could occur in the coming days .

Following the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for coastal areas including Kumamoto and Nagasaki. However, the advisory was lifted about two hours later after no abnormal changes in sea level were observed .

The quake also damaged infrastructure on Kyushu island. Approximately 40,000 households were left without power, and bullet train services were temporarily suspended for safety reasons .

Located in the Pacific "Ring of Fire", Japan frequently experiences earthquakes of varying magnitudes. However, the intensity of this quake and the scale of damage have raised new concerns across the country .
