PSG defend Champions League crown after dramatic shootout win over Arsenal
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) etched their name deeper into European football history by successfully defending their UEFA Champions League title, defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a gripping 1-1 draw in the final.
Arsenal struck first in the opening half through Kai Havertz, who gave the Premier League side an early advantage and raised hopes of a first European crown in nearly two decades.
PSG, however, responded after the break when Ousmane Dembélé converted from the penalty spot to restore parity and shift momentum in favor of the French champions.
With neither side able to find a decisive goal in regulation time or extra time, the final was settled by a tense penalty shootout. PSG held their nerve from the spot, while Arsenal paid the price for costly misses from Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhães, allowing the Parisians to secure a 4-3 victory.
The triumph makes PSG the first club since Real Madrid’s historic run between 2016 and 2018 to retain the Champions League trophy. It also sees the French giants become only the 10th club in European Cup and Champions League history to win back-to-back titles.
For Arsenal, the defeat was a bitter end to a memorable campaign. Playing in their first Champions League final since 2006, the Gunners saw their long-awaited dream of lifting Europe’s most prestigious club trophy slip away in heartbreaking fashion.
PSG’s latest success further cements their emergence as a dominant force in European football, while Arsenal are left to reflect on another near miss on the continent’s biggest stage.
