PSG edge Bayern 5-4 in record-breaking Champions League thriller
Paris Saint-Germain secured a dramatic 5-4 victory over Bayern Munich in a record-breaking UEFA Champions League semifinal first leg in Paris on Tuesday night (April 28).
The nine-goal encounter set a new record for the highest-scoring semifinal match in the competition’s history.
Bayern struck first in the 17th minute through a Harry Kane penalty, but PSG responded quickly. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia restored parity before Joao Neves put the hosts ahead. Bayern equalised again through Michael Olise, but Ousmane Dembele converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time to give PSG a 3-2 lead at the break.
PSG extended their dominance in the second half, with Kvaratskhelia and Dembele adding two more goals to make it 5-2. Bayern, however, mounted a late comeback as Dayot Upamecano and Luis Diaz scored in quick succession to reduce the deficit.
Despite late chances at both ends, no further goals were added. Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer failed to register a single save—an unusual occurrence in a Champions League knockout match.
The win marks PSG’s first victory over Bayern since 2021. The return leg is scheduled for next Wednesday in Munich, where a place in the final will be decided.
