PSL begins without spectators, festive mood missing

The popular T20 cricket tournament, the Pakistan Super League (PSL), has begun this year in a completely different atmosphere. Due to the ongoing war situation and fuel crisis, the entire tournament is being held in stadiums without spectators.

Organisers had earlier announced that spectator entry would be banned considering security and the prevailing situation. Additionally, instead of six venues, matches have been confined to just two grounds.

The biggest change came in the opening ceremony. Where last year Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium sparkled with fireworks and lights, this year there was a silent atmosphere—empty galleries and a scaled-down event.

Outside the grounds, the scene was also different. Instead of crowds of spectators, police and army personnel were deployed to enhance security. Inside the stadiums, only preparations were underway—pitch preparation, camera setups—but there was no buzz.

Eight teams are participating in the 44-match tournament, which will run until May 3. In the opening match, Lahore Qalandars defeated Hyderabad Kings by 69 runs.

Fans expressed disappointment over the absence of spectators. Many said the excitement of watching a match in the stadium cannot be replicated on television.

Players have also shared similar sentiments. Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam said playing without spectators is a different experience for them, as the crowd provides extra motivation on the field.
