Qatar have snatched stoppage-time equaliser to draw with Switzerland at World Cup opener match after Boualem Khoukhi’s goal at the the 95th minute.

Qatar survived a late final push and taken their first ever point at a FIFA World Cup match on Sunday.

That result puts all four sides in Group B at a tie atop the group standings after one game, after Canada drew Bosnia & Herzegovina 1-1 in Friday’s game at Toronto Stadium.

Breel Embolo scored the opening goal from the penalty spot after Mahmoud Abunada brought Remo Freuler down in the box.

The Swiss looked to be heading to victory — but Boualem Khoukhi struck in the fifth minute of injury time to earn a famous draw.

The result didn’t seem likely for Qatar throughout, as Switzerland held an overwhelming advantage in shot attempts (24-6), shots on goal (7-3) and possession (56 per cent vs. 31 per cent for Qatar).

Switzerland opened the game’s scoring in the 17th minute, when they earned the first penalty try of the tournament on a reckless challenge by Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Ibrahim Mah Abunada.

Breel Embolo took the try for Switzerland, and struck true towards the bottom left corner of the net to give Switzerland the lead.

That draw earns Qatar their first point in FIFA World Cup history, after the side - who hosted the 2022 World Cup - were winless in three matches.

Qatar will travel to Vancouver to take on Canada in what has unexpectedly become a very important Group B match on Thursday, while Switzerland will look to bounce back against Bosnia & Herzegovina in their next match.
