Rain triggered flash floods kills 4, 50 missing in Uttarakhand
At least four people have been confirmed dead and around 50 remain missing after heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, officials said on Wednesday (August 6).
The disaster struck late Tuesday night in Dharali village, a popular tourist area, sweeping away nearly 40 to 50 houses, hotels, and shops, according to local administration sources. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as buildings were washed away in a matter of minutes, with no prior warning.
"One after another, hotels and resorts collapsed and vanished before my eyes," a local resident told ANI.
Video footage from the area shows large-scale destruction, with strong mountain currents and landslides reducing structures to rubble. Rescue teams from the Indian Army and paramilitary forces have been deployed to carry out extensive search and rescue operations in the affected areas.
The Indian Army confirmed that one of its camps and a rescue team were also impacted by the flooding. "Efforts are ongoing despite challenging terrain and weather conditions," an army spokesperson said.
