Rain washes away Ireland's hopes of direct qualification for 2027 World Cup

Ireland's hopes of securing automatic qualification for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup were washed away after persistent rain forced the first ODI against Afghanistan to be abandoned without a ball being bowled.

The match at Bready was called off after continuous rain prevented even the toss from taking place, ending Ireland's final mathematical chance of qualifying directly through the ICC ODI rankings.

Ranked 12th in the ODI standings, Ireland needed to whitewash Afghanistan 5-0 in the five-match series while also relying on West Indies losing both ODIs to India before the September 30 ranking cut-off. The abandoned opener made that equation impossible.

Ireland must now take the longer route to the 2027 World Cup through the qualifying tournament.

The 10-team qualifier will award one direct berth to the champion. The teams finishing second, third and fourth will advance to the World Cup Super Series, where the top side will claim the final place in the tournament.

The qualifier will feature the two lowest-ranked Full Member nations (excluding co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe), the top four teams from Cricket World Cup League 2, and four teams emerging from the qualifying play-offs.

Ireland also failed to qualify directly for the 2023 ODI World Cup, exiting in the Super Six stage of the qualifiers. They now face another challenging qualification campaign to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
