Rani Hamid competing at Delhi chess tournament, teammate denied entry into India
Bangladesh’s first female International Master, Rani Hamid (Saiyeda Jasimunnesa Khatun), traveled to India's Delhi to compete in the 21st International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament. However, her teammate Ashia Sultana, who accompanied her, was stopped at Delhi Airport and denied entry into the country. The tournament started on June 7 and will run until June 14.
It was reported that Ashia Sultana had previously participated in a chess tournament in India using a medical visa. Because of this, her name was added to the blacklist of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in India, which led to her being sent back.
Expressing her disappointment, Rani Hamid said, "I am very saddened because the player who came with me was denied entry into India. This has affected me mentally, and I am unable to concentrate properly on my games."
This incident also impacted Rani Hamid’s performance. In six rounds, she managed to secure only one win and one draw, both against lower-rated opponents.
"I never travel alone. Someone always accompanies me. This time Ashia was with me. Since she had to return, I’ve been left alone," Rani Hamid added.
