Ranveer Singh controversy revives debate over Bollywood's history of informal boycotts

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has found himself at the center of controversy following his reported exit from the upcoming film Don 3. The dispute intensified after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) urged industry members to refrain from working with the actor, alleging that he withdrew from the project despite having signed a contract, causing losses to the production.

While the federation's appeal has sparked widespread discussion, it does not carry legal authority and is not considered an official industry ban. Ranveer has yet to publicly comment on the matter, and there has been no indication that the development has affected his ongoing film commitments.

The controversy has also reignited conversations about similar instances in Bollywood, where actors have reportedly faced informal boycotts or professional isolation.

Actress Shraddha Kapoor has often been cited in discussions about industry favoritism and exclusion. Despite delivering several successful films, including the Stree franchise, she has reportedly not collaborated again with a major production house after an early project. However, Kapoor has consistently maintained that her relationship with the company remains cordial.

Actor Kartik Aaryan also faced speculation about being sidelined after being dropped from Dostana 2 by Dharma Productions. Actor Chunky Panday has also revealed that he once faced an official suspension by an industry federation during the late 1980s after participating in film shoots amid a strike. According to Panday, the suspension lasted for approximately one week.

Political developments have also affected careers in Bollywood. Pakistani actors Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, both of whom achieved popularity in India, were effectively barred from working in Bollywood following restrictions imposed on Pakistani artists after the 2016 Uri attack.

Despite the controversy, reports indicate that the actor has continued work on his upcoming projects, including the film Pralay.
