Real Sociedad won the Copa del Rey after defeating Atlético Madrid in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw after extra time in Seville.

The San Sebastián side secured their fourth Copa del Rey title—and their first since 2020—after goalkeeper Unai Marrero saved penalties from Alexander Sørloth and Julián Álvarez. Pablo Marín then scored the wining spot-kick to seal victory.

Sociedad took the lead just 14 seconds into the match through Ander Barrenetxea, marking the fastest goal in a Copa del Rey final. Atlético equalised in the 18th minute through Ademola Lookman. Mikel Oyarzabal restored Sociedad’s lead from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time.

Julián Álvarez struck again late in regulation time to level the score and force extra time. With no winner after 120 minutes, the match was decided on penalties.

The defeat means Atlético Madrid miss out on a major trophy for a fifth consecutive year.

For Real Sociedad, the victory marks a remarkable turnaround under head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, who took charge in December when the club was just above the relegation zone in La Liga. Within four months, he guided the team to a domestic cup title and mid-table stability.
