At least 22 people were killed in Pakistan and Iraq as violent protests erupted following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

In Karachi, protesters surrounded the US consulate in response to the incident. Demonstrators reportedly breached the reception area of the compound, prompting security forces to open fire to disperse the crowd. At least 10 people were killed and 30 others injured in the unrest.

Separate violence in Gilgit-Baltistan left 10 more people dead, local sources said.

In Iraq, two people were killed during protests outside the US embassy in Baghdad. The fatalities occurred when security forces opened fire as demonstrators attempted to enter the heavily fortified Green Zone.

Authorities in both countries have tightened security amid fears of further unrest.

Iranian authorities confirmed Sunday morning that the Khamenei was killed in an airstrike on his palace complex in Tehran. Khamenei had served as Iran’s supreme leader for nearly four decades.
