Rekha honoured with lifetime achievement at Red Sea International Film Festival
Bollywood legend Rekha received a lifetime achievement award at the fifth Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah of Saudi Arabia, in recognition of her remarkable contribution to Indian cinema.
The festival, which began on December 4, will run until December 13.
Rekha attended the festival on December 7, and a special screening of her iconic 1981 film "Umrao Jaan" was held in the festival’s Treasure Stand section, showcasing restored classics and influential films. The auditorium was packed with cinephiles, critics, international stars, and media, all applauding the veteran actress.
Director Muzaffar Ali and the family of legendary music composer Mohammed Zahur Khayyam, whose compositions elevated the film, were also present.
Addressing the audience, Rekha said, “I do not speak much. In ‘Umrao Jaan,’ my dialogue was expressed through my eyes. My mother always said to live a life that teaches others, not to boast of your own achievements. That lesson brings me here today.”
She added, “The power of silence is deeper than words. I dedicate today’s love to my fans, friends, and family. Feelings are expressed through love, often silently, yet profoundly.”
The film originally released on January 2, 1981, and its restored version premiered on June 27, 2025.
Festival Artistic Director Fionnuala Halligan praised Rekha, saying, “Rekha is not just a part of Indian cinema—she is an identity herself. Films like "Khubsoorat", "Khoon Bhari Maang", "Ijaazat", "Lajja", and "Zubeida" have inspired generations. Her voice, expressions, and dedication to her craft have made her a living legend.”
