Baul Khoaj Mia, the soulful composer behind the beloved Baul song “Jaio na jaio na konnago, konna jaio na naiyor, tumi bine kemne thaki ekela bashor konnago”, has passed away.

He breathed his last on Thursday, June 26, at 3:30 PM at his home in Sylhet. He was 83. His death was confirmed by singer Akash Gayan.

Khoaj Mia was a reclusive, spiritual Baul, mystic, and lyricist known for his deep, philosophical music. He was a disciple of Fakir Durbin Shah, under whom he formally began his spiritual and musical journey in 1962. His songs often conveyed messages of spiritual insight and humanism.

Some of his most iconic compositions include: Amar bhoy lagilo monere, bhoy lagilo mone, amay konodin dhoriya nebo jome” (“Fear has gripped my heart and soul, will the god of death seize me one day?”). “Bhubon-mohan rup tomar-e, dekhle pran jurai, amar bari ayre bondhu, amar bari ay” (“Your beauty enchants the world, it brings peace to my soul — come home, my beloved”). “Lagaiya piriter dori, alga thaki tanere, amar bondhu moha jadu jane” (“Tied with the rope of love, yet kept loose to tug — my beloved knows great magic”).

Born on March 12, 1942, in Daulatpur village of Bishwanath Upazila, Sylhet, khoaj Mia was drawn to music from a young age. Despite opposition from his family, he continued performing across rural areas, eventually becoming a revered figure in Baul music.

His funeral prayer (Janaza) was held on Friday at 10 AM at the grounds of Daulatpur Ideal High School and College.

Baul Khoaj Mia leaves behind a legacy of mystical music and timeless lyrics that continue to inspire generations.
