Rising war tensions push up global food prices: UN
Global food prices are beginning to climb due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, the United Nations (UN) said.
According to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), its monthly Food Price Index showed a 2.4 per cent increase in global food prices between February and March, based on international market trends.
The FAO noted that the index has now risen for a second consecutive month. The surge is largely attributed to escalating tensions in the Middle East, which have driven up global energy prices, directly increasing production and transportation costs for food commodities.
Analysts warn that continued instability around the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most critical oil supply routes—could further strain global food supply chains, particularly impacting food-importing nations in the coming months.
