Ronaldo finds his own wedding rumour amusing
Speculation about Cristiano Ronaldo and his long-time partner Georgina Rodriguez's wedding is nothing new. But this time, the rumour has caused trouble for an ordinary couple in Portugal's Madeira Island. Thousands of football fans gathered outside a historic church after believing the fake news of Ronaldo's wedding, nearly disrupting the actual wedding ceremony of another couple.
The incident occurred at the nearly 500-year-old Funchal Cathedral in Madeira Island. Social media was flooded with news that Ronaldo and Georgina would secretly exchange rings and get married at this church on August 8. Crowds of Ronaldo fans, tourists and journalists began gathering around the church.
However, the wedding being prepared was for Fábio Ramos and Fátima Nicol Cunha Teixeira, a Portuguese couple living in France. The situation became more dramatic when the bride, Fátima, arrived at the cathedral in a vintage Rolls-Royce. Hundreds of fans present mistook her for Georgina and rushed towards the car. The bridal party and security personnel had to struggle to get the bride safely inside the church.
To bring the situation under control, the church's head priest, Father Marcos Gonçalves, eventually announced over the microphone that this wedding had nothing to do with Cristiano Ronaldo and that it was the only scheduled wedding at the church that day.
Later, the Funchal Cathedral's official Facebook page stated they had never faced such a situation before. The bride's entry into the church became nearly impossible due to the excessive crowd. Fans gathered not only in front of the church but also outside the nearby five-star Savoy Palace Hotel, believing that perhaps Ronaldo and Georgina's wedding reception might be held there.
Following the incident, Ronaldo's elder sister, Elma Aveiro, expressed anger on social media. She questioned why people believe such news when Ronaldo himself never announced any wedding. She accused sections of the media of spreading such rumours simply to create stories.
Ronaldo himself, however, seemed to find the whole incident amusing. He responded to a video of the incident published in local media with five laughing emojis.
Ronaldo and Georgina have been together since meeting at a Gucci store in 2016. Despite their long-term relationship with five children, they have never announced an official wedding date.
