Cristiano Ronaldo suffered another major setback in Saudi Arabia as Al Nassr fell short in the AFC Champions League Two final, losing 1–0 to Japan’s Gamba Osaka on Saturday (May 16).

Playing at the King Saud University Stadium in front of 26,000 fans, Al Nassr entered the match as clear favourites and had the opportunity to become the first Saudi club to win the continental competition. However, they were undone in the 29th minute when Denis Hümmet finished clinically from the edge of the box after a through pass from Ismaël Zebali.

Despite sustained pressure in the second half, Al Nassr failed to break down the Japanese side, who held firm to secure a famous victory and the title.

The defeat comes just days after another disappointment in the Saudi Pro League, where Al Nassr were held to a 1–1 draw by Al Hilal after a stoppage-time own goal by goalkeeper Bento. A win in that match would have sealed the league title.

Since joining Al Nassr in 2023, Ronaldo is still waiting for his first trophy with the club. However, the title race in the Saudi Pro League remains open, with Al Nassr two points ahead of Al Hilal and one match remaining. They will clinch the league crown if they beat Damac at home on Thursday.
