Ronaldo’s Al Nassr creates history by breaking 87-year-old world record

Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr has created new history by breaking a long-standing unique record in world football. The club has made the record of scoring in the most consecutive matches in the domestic top league its own. After a 1-1 draw with Al Khaleej on Saturday, Cristiano Ronaldo’s team broke the record that had remained intact for 87 years and created new history.

Previously, this record belonged to Argentina’s traditional club River Plate. From September 13, 1936 to June 4, 1939, the club’s famous team ‘La Maquina’ scored in 93 consecutive matches in the local league. During that period, River Plate scored a total of 301 goals in 93 matches.

Legendary footballers like Jose Manuel Moreno Fernandez and Adolfo Pedernera were part of that historic record of River Plate. Nearly nine decades later, Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo of Al Nassr has played a key role in leaving that feat behind.

Ronaldo shared the 93-match record by scoring the first goal for Al Nassr in a 2-1 win over Abha on 9 September. Then on Saturday, Al Nassr fully made the record its own with Abdullah Al-Hamdan’s goal against Al Khaleej.

Al Nassr’s streak of consecutive scoring began with a 4-1 win over Al-Riyadh on December 8, 2023. Since then, the Saudi club has put the ball into the opponent’s net at least once in every match. That consistency has brought them the new record in the domestic top league of world football.

However, another feat of River Plate still remains intact. Counting matches of local tournaments and cups outside the league as well, the Argentine club had scored in 96 consecutive matches. This included 93 league matches and two national cup matches against Penarol and one against Rosario Central. Therefore, River Plate’s record in the overall domestic competition account still stands.
