Curaçao produced one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, holding Ecuador to a goalless draw thanks to a record-breaking performance from veteran goalkeeper Eloy Room.

Just a week after suffering a crushing 7-1 defeat to Germany in their World Cup debut, the Caribbean nation bounced back with a resilient display against a higher-ranked Ecuador side in Kansas City. The result earned Curaçao a valuable point and kept their hopes of advancing alive.

The undisputed hero of the match was 37-year-old Room, who delivered a goalkeeping masterclass by making 15 saves — the most by any goalkeeper in a World Cup match since 1966, excluding games that went into extra time. His performance now stands as the highest save tally in a regulation-time World Cup fixture.

Only former United States goalkeeper Tim Howard has recorded more saves in a World Cup match, making 16 against Belgium in the 2014 Round of 16 after extra time. Room came within one save of matching that all-time tournament record.

Ecuador, ranked 30th in the world and widely considered favorites, dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the contest. Captain Enner Valencia came close to opening the scoring in the opening minute, but Room produced a brilliant stop to deny him.

The Ecuadorians continued to pile on the pressure through Valencia, Moisés Caicedo and several attacking waves, yet Curaçao’s goalkeeper repeatedly came to the rescue. His reflexes, positioning and composure frustrated Ecuador's forwards and preserved a famous clean sheet.

Curaçao also created a handful of opportunities on the counterattack but lacked the quality in the final third to capitalize. Nevertheless, their disciplined defensive structure and Room’s exceptional display ensured they left the field with a result few had anticipated.

While the draw does not eliminate either side from the tournament, it represents a significant setback for Ecuador, who failed to convert their dominance into three crucial points. For Curaçao, however, the result will be remembered as one of the greatest moments in the nation's football history.

The contrasting emotions at full-time reflected the significance of the outcome. Curaçao's players celebrated the draw as if it were a victory, while Ecuador were left ruing missed chances and the brilliance of a goalkeeper who stood like an impenetrable wall.
