Root becomes highest home Test run-scorer in history

Joe Root has added another milestone to his remarkable Test career, overtaking Australian great Ricky Ponting to become the highest run-scorer in Test cricket on home soil.

Root reached the landmark during England’s second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s on Saturday (August 29). He scored 24 in England’s first innings, taking his career tally on home soil to 7,594 runs.

Ponting previously held the record with 7,578 Test runs in Australia. India great Sachin Tendulkar is third on the list with 7,216 runs in home Tests.

Root is also closing in on Tendulkar’s record for the most Test runs overall. The England batter has scored 14,208 runs in 168 Tests and needs 1,713 more to surpass Tendulkar’s tally of 15,921.

England, meanwhile, remain in a strong position at Lord’s after securing a commanding innings-and-103-run victory over Pakistan in the first Test at Headingley.

Root’s latest record further underlines his extraordinary consistency in the longest format, where he continues to climb the all-time batting charts.
