Russia announces ceasefire in Ukraine for Victory Day
Russia has announced a temporary ceasefire against Ukraine on the occasion of the Victory Day anniversary of World War II. The country's defence ministry said the 48-hour ceasefire will remain in effect on May 8 and 9.
Russia said it traditionally celebrates Victory Day of World War II at this time each year, with a large military parade held in Moscow. The decision for the two-day ceasefire was taken on this occasion.
Ukraine has not yet issued any formal response to the matter.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on social media that no formal request regarding the ceasefire has reached them so far. He added that human life is more valuable than any celebration, and that now is the time for Russia's leadership to take real steps to stop the war.
