Russia assisting in construction of India’s largest nuclear power plant: Putin
Russian president Vladimir Putin has said Moscow is working closely with New Delhi to build India’s largest nuclear power plant in Kudankulam, Tamil Nadu. Of the plant’s six reactors, two have already been commissioned and Russia will ensure they operate at full capacity.
Putin shared the information during a joint press conference with prime minister Narendra Modi on Friday, December 5, during his two-day visit to India. He said, “We are implementing a flagship project for the Kudankulam nuclear power plant. Two of the six reactors are already connected to the energy grid, while the remaining four are under construction. The project will make a significant contribution to meeting India’s energy demand.”
In a statement from Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear corporation, it was confirmed that nuclear fuel has been supplied for the third reactor at Kudankulam.
Putin said that beyond expanding cooperation in the energy sector, discussions also included developing small modular reactors, floating nuclear power plants, and the use of nuclear technology in non-energy sectors such as medicine and agriculture.
He further mentioned, “Russia remains a reliable partner for India in supplying oil, gas, coal, and other energy resources. This will ensure uninterrupted energy support for India’s rapidly growing economy.”
