Russia, Ukraine must make territorial concessions for peace: Rubio
United States has said that both Russia and Ukraine will need to give up some territory in order to reach a peace agreement to end the ongoing conflict, reports BBC.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the comments during an interview with Fox News, saying that while such concessions may be difficult and seem unfair, they are necessary to bring the war to a close.
“It’s not easy, it may not be fair, but it’s what has to be done to end the war,” Rubio said.
He added that the exact border lines will ultimately be decided by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with the US acting as a mediator to facilitate communication between the two sides. “We will be there to coordinate,” he said.
Rubio, who recently attended a meeting between former President Donald Trump and President Putin, also confirmed that the US is working closely with European allies and other international partners to establish security guarantees for Ukraine.
“This needs to be implemented after the peace agreement, so that Ukraine feels secure for the future,” he said.
He noted that while many countries have expressed willingness to provide security assurances, Ukrainian officials have emphasised that the strongest guarantee lies in building a robust military.
