Russian Embassy in Dhaka marks 81st Victory Day with commemorative events
The Embassy of Russia here on Saturday (May 9) celebrated the 81st anniversary of Victory Day with a series of commemorative events in Dhaka, honouring those who contributed to the defeat of Nazi Germany during World War II.
The observance marked Russia’s annual remembrance of the Great Patriotic War and brought together embassy officials, students, teachers, members of the Russian community and Bangladeshi alumni of Soviet and Russian universities.
Students of the Embassy School staged a special cultural programme featuring patriotic songs, dances and poetry recitations dedicated to the wartime generation.
Ambassador Alexander Khozin thanked the students and teachers for their dedication, noting that preparations for the performance had continued for several months.
As part of the celebrations, the embassy also organised memorial initiatives including the “Candle of Memory” and “Garden of Memory,” both of which have become annual traditions at the mission.
To honour war veterans and family histories, embassy staff and their relatives arranged an “Immortal Regiment” exhibition showcasing photographs and personal stories connected to the Second World War.
Victory Day events also extended beyond the embassy premises, with a motorcycle and car rally taking place in Dhaka’s Gulshan area. Participants included officials from the Russian Embassy and the Russian House in Dhaka, along with teachers, students, expatriates and former graduates of Soviet and Russian institutions.
Among those addressing the gathering were Ambassador Alexander Khozin, Russian House Director Alexandra Khlevnoy, Rodina Compatriots Association Chairperson Elena Bass, Soviet Alumni Association leader Mizanur Rahman and Liberation War Academy Trust Chairman Abul Azad.
Organisers said the annual rally has evolved into a unique tradition in Dhaka, bringing together people interested in Russian history and the remembrance of World War II veterans.
