Sadie Sink steals the limelight as Spider-Man's new villain Jean Grey
From the global box office to social media, 'Spider-Man' is making waves everywhere. The new Spider-Man film is enjoying phenomenal success. And on social media, a distinct space has been carved out for 'Jean Grey' — the villainous character in 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' — who is now the superhero's adversary.
Sometimes the character creates romantic chemistry between Jean Grey and Peter Parker, and sometimes she intrudes into Peter's relationship with MJ. With all this buzz, who is the actress behind the much-talked-about character 'Jean Grey'?
Her name is Sadie Sink. She is just 24 years old, but the American actress has already established a solid presence in Hollywood. She made her mark as the brave teenager 'Max Mayfield' in Netflix's hit series 'Stranger Things' and with her emotional performance in the psychological drama 'The Whale'. But this time, she seems to have surpassed everything through 'Spider-Man'.
Born in Texas, USA, in 2002, Sadie Sink began her acting career at a very young age. Her stage journey started at the age of seven with local theatre. As a child artist, she made heads turn in 2012 by playing the lead role in the Broadway musical 'Annie'. In 2015, she had the opportunity to perform alongside legendary actress Helen Mirren in the Broadway play 'The Audience', playing a young Queen Elizabeth II.
This stage success brought her to the big screen. In 2017, Sadie joined the second season of Netflix's sci-fi series 'Stranger Things' as 'Max' and shot to fame overnight. Her emotional and thrilling performance as skateboarder Max in the series' fourth season earned critical acclaim worldwide. She later garnered massive attention for her brilliant performance in pop star Taylor Swift's 'All Too Well: The Short Film'. In 2022, she earned a Critics' Choice Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role alongside Brendan Fraser in 'The Whale'. She has also recently received a Tony Award nomination for her outstanding performance in the Broadway play 'John Proctor Is the Villain'.
After touching one milestone after another in her acting career, Sadie stepped into Marvel's universe. However, the process of her joining this film was shrouded in extreme secrecy. In March 2025, international media outlet Deadline reported that Sadie Sink had joined Tom Holland's new 'Spider-Man' franchise. Since then, intense speculation began among fans that she might be seen as 'Jean Grey'.
In an interview, Sadie expressed her surprise, saying she first found out about the casting through internet theories. She had to keep the film's main plot and her character under wraps for over a year. Even in the film's trailer, she was shown as a mysterious character in a hoodie who can control minds. However, at the world premiere in Los Angeles, musician Steve Lacey accidentally revealed the secret, saying his favourite character was 'Jean'.
Due to Marvel's high security, a fake name was used for the character. Even Sadie Sink did not get the chance to read the full script when she went to the London set. Regarding the depth of her character, Sadie Sink said that Kevin Feige and Louis D'Esposito called her to the Marvel office and explained the entire character to her, describing Jean Grey as a complex and traumatised character with deep pain behind her negative behaviour.
The character Jean Grey is also expected to appear in Marvel's future 'X-Men' franchise. There is strong buzz in Hollywood that Kit Connor will join as Scott Summers or 'Cyclops' and Samara Weaving as 'Emma Frost'. However, the young star has kept the number of films under her Marvel contract a mystery.
