SAFF Games return to Pakistan after 23 years, India agrees to participate

After a long wait of 23 years, the South Asian Games are finally set to return to Pakistan. The 14th edition of the regional sporting extravaganza will be held from April 4 to 11, 2027 , featuring 28 sports across three cities: Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar.

According to Pakistani media reports, India has signalled its intention to participate in the upcoming Games. Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Secretary General Khalid Mehmood said India has given in-principle consent to take part and will provide detailed information about its contingent and officials by January 2027 .

The decision came during a high-level meeting of the South Asian Olympic Council (SAOC), where Indian representatives participated via video link and confirmed their country's intention to participate, subject to government approval . The last time Pakistan hosted the South Asian Games was in 2004 in Islamabad .

Over 6,000 athletes and officials are expected to participate in the Games , with Islamabad hosting 15 disciplines including the opening and closing ceremonies, Lahore staging 10 sports, and Peshawar organising three .

Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has directed all relevant authorities to strengthen security measures and ensure timely completion of sports venues across the three host cities . A steering committee has been formed to monitor preparations on a monthly basis.
