Some nights in the World Cup knockout stage are not just about football, they are about writing history. Tonight is one such night. At 2:00 am Bangladesh time, five-time world champions Brazil will face Europe's rising force Norway at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. And at 6:00 am tomorrow, hosts Mexico will battle England at the legendary Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. On one side, the Vikings will try to stop the samba artistry; on the other, England will look to protect their heritage against the roar of the Mexican Wave. The backdrops may differ, but the goal is the same, a place in the quarter-finals.

In New Jersey, Brazil are the favourites on paper. Carlo Ancelotti's side believe in keeping possession and tiring out their opponents. But the absence of Lucas Paqueta in midfield has forced some changes to their plans. The responsibility of controlling the tempo will fall on Bruno Guimaraes and Casemiro. Up front, Matheus Cunha will build attacking links, while Vinicius Junior's pace and dribbling on the left flank will be Brazil's biggest weapon. If Vinicius can break down Norway's defence in one-on-one situations, opportunities will open up for Endrick. If needed, the experience of Neymar or Raphinha could also turn the match around in the second half.

But beating Norway will not be easy. Stale Solbakken's side know they cannot hold possession for long against Brazil. So they will wait for the right moment. And to capitalise on that moment, they have Erling Haaland. The world-class striker may not need many touches, one perfect pass or one cross could change the match. Martin Odegaard's creativity in midfield, combined with the pace of Alexander Sorloth and Antonio Nusa on the flanks, makes Norway's counter-attacks deadly. Their height advantage from corners and free-kicks will also be a major challenge for Brazil.

Still, analysts favour Brazil due to their experience, squad depth and attacking variety. But there is one condition, they must stop the supply line to Haaland and not give Odegaard time on the ball. If they can do that, the samba rhythm could carry them to the quarter-finals. But if Norway can capitalise on quick transitions and set-pieces, the football world may have to brace for one of the biggest upsets of this World Cup.

On the other hand, the match at the Azteca Stadium is not just England vs Mexico; it is a test of nature, emotion and mental resilience. The stadium sits at an altitude of nearly 7,500 feet above sea level. The thin air, the roar of nearly 100,000 fans and the home atmosphere are Mexico's biggest strengths. It will not be easy for the opposition to maintain their rhythm in this environment.

Thomas Tuchel's England will look to control the game by keeping possession. Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham will provide balance in midfield, while Harry Kane will not only score but also play a role in building attacks. But England's biggest test will be adapting quickly to the altitude and handling the pressure of the home crowd.

Mexico, however, will stick to their familiar attacking football. They will win the ball in midfield and use the flanks to launch quick attacks. Julian Quinones' pace, Santiago Gimenez's presence in the box and Alexis Vega's creativity could put England's defence under serious pressure. As the match progresses, the Azteca crowd will become an even bigger weapon for the hosts. If England fail to take control early on or if Mexico's defence can isolate Kane, a home victory would not be unexpected.

Ultimately, this night may not just decide two quarter-finalists; it will show that in modern football, it is not just about stars but also about tactics, environment, mental strength and the ability to seize the moment. Will the samba survive in New Jersey, or will it be stopped by Viking strength? Will the Mexican Wave drown out the English at the Azteca, or will England's experience ride out the storm? The answers will come in the next few hours.
