Samsung patent hints at major Galaxy camera redesign

Samsung may be preparing to rethink the camera design of its future Galaxy smartphones, with a newly surfaced patent revealing a possible shift to a horizontal camera bar on the rear of a foldable device.

The patent, reported by technology website SammiGuru, shows a camera module stretching horizontally across the back of the phone. The design would mark a visible departure from the vertically arranged camera sensors used across many current Galaxy models.

A horizontal camera layout is not entirely new for Samsung. The company used a similar arrangement on several Galaxy S10 models in 2019 before moving toward vertically aligned camera systems. The latest patent has now revived speculation that Samsung could revisit the design for future devices.

One possible motivation is the growing adoption of magnetic wireless charging and Qi2-compatible accessories. A tall vertical camera module can limit the usable surface on the back of a phone, potentially interfering with magnetic power banks, wallets and other accessories.

A horizontal camera bar could leave more usable space below the camera module, potentially making it easier to attach magnetic accessories. The approach could be particularly useful for foldable phones, where manufacturers face tighter constraints in arranging cameras, batteries and other internal components.

However, a patent does not necessarily mean the design will appear on a commercial smartphone. Companies routinely patent concepts to protect potential technologies and design alternatives without committing to mass production.

Samsung has yet to confirm whether the horizontal camera bar will be used in an upcoming Galaxy device, or identify any model or launch timeline associated with the design.
