To further strengthen its position in the foldable smartphone market, South Korean tech giant Samsung is working on a new type of display. The company plans to use a relatively wider screen instead of the conventional narrow display in an upcoming generation device of the Galaxy Z Fold series. The main objective is to enhance the experience of watching videos and enjoying multimedia content on a large screen.

According to a report by tech news outlet Engadget, the success of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has encouraged Samsung to rethink the design and display of its foldable devices. A report by South Korea's ET News claims that the company plans to change the current fold series' 4:3 aspect ratio in a prospective model for 2027.

Tech experts speculate that the new device's display may feature an aspect ratio close to 16:9 or 16:10. If implemented, the screen will be much wider compared to conventional foldable phones, offering distinct advantages especially when watching widescreen video content such as movies and YouTube. However, Samsung has not yet officially announced the exact proportions or design of the new display.

When widescreen videos are played on the 4:3 aspect ratio screen of current foldable phones, black bars appear at the top and bottom of the display—a phenomenon known in tech terms as letterboxing. The new wider display is expected to significantly reduce this issue, ensuring that while the device remains relatively compact when folded, unfolding it reveals a larger, video-friendly screen.

Meanwhile, Samsung also plans to expand its range of foldable devices in 2027. Various reports suggest that multiple foldable models could hit the market that year, including new versions of the Fold and Flip series as well as devices featuring trifold technology. Previously, uncertainties regarding production had arisen due to the high cost and component supply issues associated with trifold devices.

Apple is also preparing to enter the foldable market around the time of this Samsung initiative. Various tech reports indicate that Apple's first foldable iPhone could make its debut during an iPhone product launch event toward the end of 2026. Consequently, competition between the two tech giants in the foldable smartphone market is expected to intensify further over the coming years.
