Santner turns down $1m BBL offer to prioritise New Zealand

New Zealand white-ball captain Mitchell Santner has turned down a two-year offer worth around US$1 million from Big Bash League side Adelaide Strikers to prioritise his international commitments.

The 34-year-old all-rounder opted to remain focused on New Zealand’s packed schedule and his leadership responsibilities, with the team set to host India in a three-format series from October 22 before a four-Test series against Australia.

Santner also wants to retain his central contract and captaincy while preparing for next year’s T20 World Cup, which will be hosted in New Zealand.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said Santner’s decision reflected his commitment to the national team.

“To me, it’s a measure of the man’s character,” Walter told the New Zealand Herald. “Putting the team first is a reflection of his character.”

Walter said Santner attaches significant importance to leading New Zealand and playing the upcoming Test matches.

Some New Zealand players, including Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Lockie Ferguson, Mark Chapman and Adam Milne, have opted for more flexible arrangements that allow them to focus more on franchise cricket.

Walter said the growth of franchise cricket was a natural part of the modern game but stressed the importance of players retaining their desire to represent New Zealand.
