Saudi Arabia strike first to shock Uruguay
Saudi Arabia produced a major early surprise in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H opener against Uruguay at Miami Stadium, taking a 1–0 first-half lead through Abdulla Al-Amri’s goal in the 41st minute.
The breakthrough came from a set-piece when Hassan Al-Tambakti’s powerful header was spilled by Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Al-Amri reacted quickest inside the box to fire home from close range, punishing the defensive error and putting the Asian side ahead.
Uruguay, featuring stars including Federico Valverde and Darwin Núñez, had dominated possession in the opening stages but struggled to break through Saudi Arabia’s compact and disciplined defensive structure.
The Green Falcons, set up with a tight back line and quick transitional play, absorbed early pressure before capitalising on one of their key first-half opportunities.
The result adds to Saudi Arabia’s reputation as World Cup giant-killers after their famous win over Argentina in 2022, while Uruguay face an uphill task after a frustrating opening 45 minutes.
