Saudi Crown Prince lobbied Trump for Iran attack
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud repeatedly pressured US President Donald Trump to authorise military strikes on Iran, which were carried out jointly by US and Israeli forces early Saturday, according to The Washington Post.
Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several top commanders were killed in these strikes.
Citing four officials, The Washington Post reported that Salman privately urged action despite publicly promoting dialogue and respecting Iran’s sovereignty. Saudi Arabia’s motivations included protecting its oil infrastructure and weakening long-time rival Iran.
Under combined Saudi and Israeli pressure, Trump approved the strike, which could continue over several days.
In retaliation, Iran launched counterattacks on Dubai, Doha, and Riyadh. Saudi authorities condemned the strikes, and Crown Prince Salman has vowed to mobilize all resources for a potential response.
