Saudi Arabia has announced a landmark change to its flagship global Quran event, allowing women to compete for the first time in the competition’s 45-year history.

A dedicated women’s category will be introduced in the upcoming 46th edition of the King Abdulaziz International Holy Quran Competition, one of the world’s most prestigious contests for Quran memorisation, recitation and interpretation, traditionally held in Makkah.

The reform was approved by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud following a proposal from Islamic Affairs Minister Sheikh Dr. Abdullatif bin Abdulaziz Al Al-Sheikh, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

Officials described the move as a major milestone in the competition’s history, expanding participation to both men and women and reflecting broader efforts to promote Quranic engagement.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs said the decision underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to advancing Quranic initiatives and recognising women’s contributions in religious fields.

Organisers are already preparing for the upcoming edition, which typically draws participants from over 100 countries. The closing ceremony is scheduled for August 19.
