Scaloni views Ancelotti’s tactical remarks as a compliment
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has taken Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti's recent comments about the world champions' playing style as a positive compliment rather than criticism.
Ancelotti had previously remarked that the reigning world champions do not rely on relentless pressing or high-speed football. Responding to the comment at a pre-match press conference ahead of Argentina's clash against Austria, Scaloni stated that he saw nothing negative in the Italian manager's analysis.
"I took it positively," Scaloni said. "He spoke well of us, not poorly. I understood exactly what he meant. He was speaking in a mix of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese, so perhaps it wasn't completely clear to everyone. But I took it as praise, not criticism. I am completely sure of that."
The Argentine tactician also questioned the modern definition of 'intensity' in football, arguing that strategic awareness and defensive organization are often more vital than non-stop running or high pressing.
"We have to see what is actually meant by intensity," Scaloni explained. "When you don't have the ball, you must ensure that the opponent cannot hurt you. Very few teams play man-to-man marking across the whole pitch or deploy an ultra-high pressing line anymore. Teams are now reinforcing the midfield, and that is where the fate of the match is being decided."
