Scientists uncover hidden solar whirlpools in sharpest-ever view of the Sun

Scientists have captured the closest and most detailed images ever recorded of the Sun's surface, revealing previously unseen plasma vortices that could transform understanding of solar activity and improve space weather forecasting.

The breakthrough, reported in the journal Nature, was achieved using the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaii, the world's most powerful solar observatory.

The newly observed vortices form through the interaction of superheated plasma flows and the Sun's intense magnetic fields. As hot plasma moves across the solar surface, it twists and reshapes magnetic field lines, storing energy that can later be released in the form of solar flares or coronal mass ejections (CMEs).

Researchers also identified clear evidence of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, a physical process that occurs when adjacent layers of gas or fluid move at different speeds, creating swirling vortices. Similar phenomena can be observed in Earth's oceans and atmosphere.

According to Dr. David Boboltz of the U.S. National Solar Observatory (NSO), understanding these small-scale processes is crucial because the Sun drives all space weather, which can disrupt power grids, satellite operations, communications systems, and space missions.

NSO scientist Dr. Friedrich Woeger said the observations also provide new clues to one of solar physics' biggest mysteries—why the Sun's outer atmosphere is dramatically hotter than its visible surface.

Scientists believe the unprecedented high-resolution observations will significantly improve future space weather prediction and help protect critical technological infrastructure on Earth.
